Allan Lyons Warns Rutherglen Residents About Fuel Allowance Scam
Reform UK candidate Allan Lyons has issued an urgent warning to vulnerable residents across the Rutherglen constituency about a targeted scam that has been preying on older people and those on low incomes by falsely claiming to be connected to the winter fuel allowance.
The scam, which has been reported across South Lanarkshire, involves fraudsters contacting vulnerable householders and attempting to extract personal information or money under the guise of a fuel payment scheme. Allan says that the stress caused to older people by such scams is unacceptable.
'These scammers deliberately target the most vulnerable people in our communities — older residents, those on fixed incomes, people who are worried about their heating bills,' said Allan. 'It is predatory and it is wrong. I am asking everyone in Rutherglen and Cambuslang to check in on elderly neighbours and family members to make sure they have not been targeted.'
Allan is also calling on South Lanarkshire Council and Police Scotland to increase awareness campaigns targeting this type of fraud, particularly ahead of the winter period when fuel costs are highest and anxiety about bills is greatest.
He added: 'The Citizens Advice Bureau in Rutherglen and Cambuslang can provide free help and support to anyone who has been targeted. Do not be embarrassed — reach out and get help. And remember: legitimate government payments will never cold-call you asking for your bank details.'
