Young Families Priced Out of Rutherglen as Housing Costs Rise

Reform UK candidate Allan Lyons has raised concerns about the shortage of affordable housing across Rutherglen and Cambuslang, saying that young families and key workers are being priced out of communities they have grown up in.

Work has begun on a new purpose-built supported accommodation project in Rutherglen, which Allan welcomes as a positive step. However, he says that the broader need for affordable homes for ordinary working families needs to be addressed with much greater urgency.

'Every family in Rutherglen that wants to own or rent a decent affordable home should be able to do so,' said Allan. 'But too many people are stuck — either on social housing waiting lists, or priced out of the market entirely. That is a failure of housing policy at every level.'

Allan is calling for a streamlining of the planning process to make it easier to build new homes, greater use of brownfield sites across the constituency, and incentives for developers to include affordable units in new developments.

'Reform UK will put housebuilding at the heart of our economic and social agenda. A home is not a luxury — it is the foundation of a stable and dignified life. I will fight for the people of Rutherglen to have that foundation,' he said.
