Rutherglen Town Centre Revival: Allan Lyons Sets Out His Vision

Reform UK candidate Allan Lyons has set out an ambitious vision for the regeneration of Rutherglen town centre, calling on both South Lanarkshire Council and the Scottish Government to back investment that would restore the historic burgh's commercial heart. Rutherglen's town centre, like many Scottish high streets, has faced significant pressures in recent years — with changing retail habits, high business rates, and reduced footfall all taking their toll. But Allan believes the town has the assets and community spirit to stage a real revival. 'Rutherglen is one of Scotland's oldest royal burghs and its town centre should reflect that proud history,' said Allan. 'I want to see Rutherglen's high street buzzing with independent businesses, attractive public spaces, and community events that bring people together.' Key elements of Allan's vision include substantial cuts to business rates for independent traders, investment in the physical environment of the town centre, support for pop-up and market trading to animate empty units, and a push for investment in improved transport connections to the town. 'The community spirit is here — I see it every time I visit the town. What is missing is political will and the right support. I will provide both at Holyrood,' he said.
